River Avon
Salisbury & District Angling Club
I'd had enough of sitting in the office staring at the computer (even if it was surfing for fly fishing sites). What was needed was a spot of fishing. So after checking that there wasn't a weed cut in progress, I made an early morning trip to the Avon. I fished for a couple of hours and still had time to do a full days work back in the office.
The river was a delight. Long tresses of water weed wafted in the current, whilst the surface reflected the rich green of the luxuriant bankside vegetation. It was very much high summer. What was lacking was any insect life. An occasional rise gave the position of a fish, but patience was required to target these infrequent risers.
A better strategy was to seek out the fish 'on the fin', up in the water and feeding on nymphs. These fish are normally more willing to grab a passing fly than those sat on the bottom. The grayling were back in fine condition and proved very strong fighters. The highlight of the day, other than a kingfisher that greeted my arrival, was the wild trout. They are such beautiful bright fish.
